SPECULATING GLASS
A series of publications, prototypes and podcasts 2019
Undergraduate Project with Justina Alexandroff, Jacob Morgan, Mathilda Talyor, Elektra Thomson and Elinor Wegner
Glass is a facilitator for otherness. Due to its ability of recognition from two sides, it is a divider creating connections in and between indoor, outdoor, business, home and streets. Glass creates this feeling of transparency; an ‘openness’ to the public, demonstrating an illusion of people’s ability to not hide, creating a facade for secrecy and trustworthiness.
Transparent glass is used as a facilitator within our ZAO project, illustrating its power and presence that we have become numb to. Through the contrast of the ZAO world, which only had translucent glass to the ZAOs involuntary adaption to our world of transparent glass. Patricia Leavy stated that, “there is an expression in sociology that says,’ I don’t know who discovered water, but I doubt it was fish’. In other words, environments are nearly impossible to perceive when we are immersed in them”.
A series of objects, publications and podcasts were made to illustrate the speculative reality of the ZAO. Illustrating their process of adapting to our glass filled world, speculating the possible characteristics and reactions to build a picture of them in order to design accordingly.
